yr enwocaf o Ddwniaid sir Gaerfyrddin a'r cyntaf i fyw yn Ystrad Merthyr, ger Cydweli, plasty a godwyd yn 1518. Priododd ddwywaith, a bu iddo wyth o blant, yr hynaf ohonynt yn 11 oed yn 1533. Ond gwelodd ddryllio ei deulu gan heintiau mynych y cyfnod. Canodd beirdd fel Syr Owain ap Gwilym, Harri ap Rhys ap Gwilym, Tomas Fychan, William Llŷn, Gruffudd Hiraethog, Owain Gwynedd, etc., iddo ef, a'i blant, a'i gartref, a chedwir eu cerddi yn Llanst. MSS. 40 a 133, ac N.L.W. MS. 728. Yr oedd yn fyw yn 1566 pan anerchwyd ef gan Wiliam Cynwal, ond ni chanodd un bardd iddo'n ddiweddarach.

Y mae Gruffudd Dwnn yn bwysig fel un o'r boneddigion a ymroes i gopïo a chasglu llawysgrifau yn yr 16eg g. a'r 17eg., er nad oes iddo enwogrwydd rhai fel John Jones, Gelli Lyfdy. Yr enghraifft orau o'i waith yw Llanst. MS. 40 a'r nodiadau yn Mostyn MS. 184, ond y mae tystiolaeth am lawysgrifau eraill a gollwyd. Bu llawysgrifau enwog yn ei feddiant, megis Hendregadredd, Peniarth 70 a 109, etc. Bu'n noddwr amlwg i'r beirdd, ond dylid sylwi i William Salesbury, hefyd, aros yn Ystrad Merthyr pan oedd yn Abergwili.
